Labyrinth: a complicated irregular network of passages or paths in which it is difficult to find one's way; a maze.
You may associate labyrinths with Halloween mazes or Percy Jackson, but for centuries before, they were an ancient Christian meditative practice. At many retreat centers and convents around the world, you’ll find a labyrinth path set for people to walk through in a reflective, contemplative state. Contrary to the contemporary definition found above, historically, these labyrinths include just one path to the center. How might this pattern or practice inspire your art as it relates, or does not relate, to Christian life? Embark on a journey through a labyrinth near you; what comes up for you as you are led to the center through consistent yet still surprising twists and turns? What might the increase of labyrinth use in healthcare mean?
Consider these questions and more as you allow “labyrinth” to guide your inspiration for creation in this next issue. Send us your thoughts, ideas, ponderings below.
